Access files on your Android via Wi-Fi with Samba Filesharing

Access files on your Android via Wi-Fi with Samba Filesharing
Want a nice, simple way to access files on your Android smartphone over a wireless network? Check out Samba Filesharing, an easy-to-configure app which lets you browse your SD card contents in your favorite desktop file manager.

After you install the app, launch it and create a password -- the default username is SDCARD, though you can change that if you wish. Once your changes have been made, tap your Back button to return to the main screen and then tap Menu to bring up the four action buttons. Disable and re-enable SMB services, and you'll receive a notification with the path to your device - - such as \\192.168.0.100 and \\ANDROID.

You can also configure the NetBIOS name (the ANDROID bit) if you want to use something a bit more personal. The app also features a 'wakelock' which keeps your Droid from dozing when you're trying to access files.

Root access is required, and you'll also need Superuser or Superuser Permissions installed (find one with a quick Market search).

Netgear CEO Patrick Lo has spoken out over Apple’s closed ecosystem and the ego of Steve Jobs. Speaking at a lunch in Sydney Australia, Lo questioned the future of Apple’s closed system, in the face of mounting competition from Google’s “Open” Android operating system.

Once Steve Jobs goes away, which is probably not far away, then Apple will have to make a strategic decision on whether to open up the platform. Ultimately a closed system just can ’t go that far … If they continue to close it and let And roid continue to creep up then it’s pretty difficult as I see it.
Lo also went on to criticize Steve Jobs over his thoughts on Flash.
What’s the reason for him to trash Flash? There’s no reason other than ego.
Lo was asked if he had spoken to Steve Jobs over his concerns but replied “Steve Jobs doesn’t give me a minute!”

Lo did not stop with Apple, he also claimed that Microsoft had fallen too far behind with the Windows Phone 7 platform and that it was now game over.

Strong views, but are they fair? Do Apple need to open up the platform to continue the growth needed to see off Android? Do Apple care about the iPhone being the number one selling smartphone? Let us know what you think in the comments!

White iPhone 4

In an interview on the Engadget Show yesterday Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak speculated the white iPhone 4 will be coming very soon, stating his belief manufacturing problems had been resolved and Apple would begin shipments in the near future.

Woz sp ecifically mentioned camera issues with some of the DIY conversion kits recently circulated using leaked parts from component suppliers — something he personally experimented with himself. He went on to explain that photos taken with modded parts looked like they were “taken through cellophone” due to light leaking through the painted glass, and that he thinks Apple decided against shipping because they couldn’t find a way to fix the problem.

We told you last week that Apple started using a new painting process to help with the issues plaguing the white iPhone, which lined up with reports that the white iPhone had shown up in Best Buy and Vodafone’s ordering system, so Steve’s statements don’ t seem so far off.

Do you think we could finally be seeing the mystical white iPhone 4 soon, or is it still just a pipe dream? Sound off in the comments below!

UPDATE: We altered the language slightly — seems Woz is basing his comments on rumors just like the rest of us. No special Apple co-founder info involved.

Google Docs update brings Collections, Priority Sort, and file previews

Google Docs update brings Collections, Priority Sort, and file previews
Your Google Docs dashboard just got a whole lot easier to use, thanks to a slew of new features. The update includes additional filtering options and Priority Sort -- sort of the Google Docs equivalent of Gmail's Priority Inbox. Priority Sort uses a number of signals to determine which files require your immediate attention. Folders have been replaced by Collections, which are a mashup of both folders and tags. Just as you can slap multiple tags on an email message in Gmail, your Docs files can reside in several Collections.

The preview pane -- which we told you about a little while back -- is now live as well. The preview pane shows thumbnailed images as well as a file's sharing settings and which collection(s) it belongs to. One other minor -- but extremely useful -- addition is keyboard-powered multiple selections. No longer do you have to check multiple boxes. Just hold down shift or control on Windows (as you would do in Explorer) or cmd on Mac.

As with other Google updates, this is being rolled out gradually -- so you'll have to wait patiently for your Docs interface to update to enjoy the new features.

Motorola Superbowl ad targets Apple, shows no product

According to Android Central this is Motorola’s big Superbowl commercial for their new Android 3.0 Honeycomb-running Xoom tablet, and it̵ 7;s targeting Apple’s iPad by once again trotting out the old canard of Apple fascism. I’m glad AC managed to sleuth that out because I’m not sure many mainstream football viewers are going to have any idea at all what this thing is about.

It sure would be fun to guess though. I’m going for Spaceballs sequel. Leave your funniest answer in the comments!

Skype 5 for Mac intentionally blocks Flash and other programs from using your webcam

Skype 5 for Mac intentionally blocks Flash and other programs from using your webcam
It seems that Skype 5 for Mac, by design, blocks any other application from using your webcam while it's installed. A commenter on the bug report suggests that it also affects Windows machines, but we were unable to replicate the bug with Windows 7.

The crazy thing is that you have to uninstall Skype 5 before using your webcam with other programs, including Flash applets on websites. It almost makes sense that Skype would reserve your webcam when it's running -- but even when it isn't? As the commenters on Hacker News note, the Skype for Mac support forum isn't the happiest place on the interwebs at the moment.

To top things off, Skype has known about the issue since the Skype 5 for Mac beta in November. Skype developer Beom Soo Park even admits that it's a feature, not a bug. There's no explanation for the very, very odd functionality, and no ETA for a fix.

[Just as this post published, the Skype bug tracker has gone offline. Hopefully it's just temporary.]

Motorola i1Q headed to Sprint Nextel?

Motorola i1Q headed to Sprint Nextel?

Motorola i1q

If you're on Nextel and have a hankering for some a physical QWERTY keyboard, it looks like relief might one day be in sight. The Motorola i1q (a follow-up to the also-rugged Motorola i1 on Nextel) appears to be a fairly rugged device, with full physical buttons -- including menu, home, back and call/end. It's said to be rocking Android 2.1 on a slow processor -- n o great surprise -- but "manufacturing is quite robust."

No word about when we may see this guy drop, but we could see a lot of you in the field rocking this guy. There's one more pic after the break. [via Grupoandroid] Thanks, Andres!

Honeycomb SDK preview MIA?

Honeycomb SDK preview MIA?

Honeycomb preview

While nobody is quite sure why (none of us, anyway), the Honeycomb SDK preview seems to have gone AWOL for most everyone looking for it.  We started to get tips and questions Saturday evening, then some chatter showed up about it in the Android-Developers Google group, and our friends over at Android Community noticed the same thing.  At first, you could uninstall the whole SDK and reinstall it all at once as a work-around, but now even that doesn't seem to be working.  Guess about what's happening all seem to center around Google's event on Feb 2, which should answer a lot of our questions about Honeycomb.  Phil will be there, and all of us will be watching and we'll keep you updated as it happens. [Android-Developers; Android Community]
