Toast the new year with a virtual glass of booze on your iPhone (or iPad!)

Posted by email
Toast the new year with a virtual glass of booze on your iPhone (or iPad!)
IKEA, the lord of bland, cheap, spruce and spartan Scandinavian furniture, has released a toasting app just in time for New Year's Eve. Pick from the huge range of glasses and drinks, and enjoy a virtual toast!

The app, which is called Skål!, or "Cheers!" in English, has a neat trick up its sleeve: it uses the rear-facing camera to create a backdrop for you r virtual drink. Then, as you drink from your iPhone (or iPad, or iPod touch), the drink, its contents and the background rotate to complete the illusion. You can even save a copy of the scene, if you're the kind of person that likes to keep mementos.

The app is free, which makes this our top pick for both saving money and preventing any cataclysmic chundering this New Year's Eve.

If you need further convincing of just how awesome this app is, there's a cute video of it in action after the break.

[If you manage to take a photo of yourself drinking a massive stein of virtual beer on your iPad, please leave a link in the comments. -- Update: forget that, the iPad doesn't have a camera!]

There are times when you would love to get some reading done, but are not in a position to stop what you are doing, sit down, and read the old fashioned way. No worries,if you have an iPhone or iPad it already knows how to read for you.

[Special Thanks to dandbj13 from the forums for this tip! ]

To have your iPhone or iPad read to you:

  1. Tap Settings
  2. Tap General
  3. Tap Accessibility
  4. Tap VoiceOver
  5. Tu rn on VoiceOver

If you find yourself using it often you can set up Triple-click Home as a shortcut:

  1. Tap Settings
  2. Tap General
  3. Tap Accessibility
  4. Tap Triple-click home
  5. Set it Toggle VoiceOver (or to Ask if you want a list of options)

Now, when you are out and about and want to have something read to you, like a long forum thread, or a few pages of your latest iBooks purchase, just triple-click the home button and your iPhone or iPad will start reading to you in a surprisingly clear voice. Triple-click again to exit VoiceOver.

To get the most out of this option, you should take a few minutes to read up on our VoiceOver tutorial.

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you’d like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to dailytips@tipb.com. (If it’s especially awesome and previously unknown to us, we’ll even give ya a reward…)

Nike Training Club App Turns iPhone into Your Personal Trainer

If getting back into shape is one of your top New Year resolutions for 2011, there’s good news for you. Nike has just released the ‘NikeWomen Training Club‘ free iOS app which works like a virtual personal trainer, anytime, anywhere. Though Nike targets only women members for the “Training Club”, I believe that the included fitness regime/workouts would be equally beneficial for men as well. The app has scores of individual exercises, group workouts and ranks pretty high on my list of top fitness training apps. Here’s why!

Users who’ve used the earlier version of this app on the iPhone will be mighty impressed with the new user interface and the wide range of workouts available in the updated version. There are several full-body workouts for 30 or 45 minutes and the app lets you bookmark your favorite workout as a quick-start. The app can be paused during a workout to see a demo of the current exercise. The app measures your time spent on each exercise and prompts you to switch to the next one as per the workout schedule.

The app provides a number of drills catering to strength, cardio, interval and core t raining. Each one of us has a different fitness level and varying stamina. The Training Club app takes this into account and lets users select an appropriate goal, fitness level and a list of suitable workouts. The one size fits all rule just doesn’t work for human fitness and I’m glad that Nike has kept this principle in mind while creating the Training Club application.

Nike Training Club not only teaches you how to improve your overall fitness, it encourages you to go that extra mile and unlocks exclusive reward content when you reach training milestones. While it’s still no match for having a personal trainer, the Nike Training Club app is just about as close it gets.

The app is a double treat for music lovers who want to get back into shape as it lets users set their workout to albums and playlists from their own music library. If you are a lazy bum who just doesn’t fancy going to the gym, the NikeWomen Training Club app is nothing short of a godsend for you.

Here’s a video of the NikeWomen Training Club app in action (courtesy of LifeHacker)!

The SMS bug -- what it is, and what you need to do

SMS bug

If you're awake and have looked at the Internet today, you've likely seen the end of the world as we know it played out in blog after blog because of a bug in the Android SMS application.  It's the same bug some of you have been dealing with -- messages end up going to the wrong contact when using the stock messaging application on your Android phone.  First things first -- it doesn't do other evil things like make your alarm not work, or delete you r pictures, or brick your phone -- it only causes SMS messages to go to the wrong party, which is bad enough.  So you can safely ignore all the other scary things you've heard may happen, because they wont.  There's two issues here that need addressed, and an easy fix.  Follow the break to read more. Skype for iPhone brings video calls over 3G

Skype for iPhone brings video calls over 3G
Skype for iOS 3A little sooner than expected, Skype has just launched a new version of its iOS app [iTunes] that enables Skype-to-Skype video calls, via Wi-Fi or 3G.

Those lucky enough to have an iPhone 4 or 3GS, or 4th generation iPod touch, will be able to make two-way video calls with any other Skype user , including desktop and laptop PC users, and presumably other mobile Skype users on Android or BlackBerry.

This software update also affects the iPad and third-generation iPod touch, but they can only receive video, rather than send it.

The big news, of course, is that Skype is allowing video calls over 3G. It remains to be seen what the mobile operator's response will be, once people start making use of free, high-bandwidth video-to-video calls. We always figured that the Wi-Fi-only restriction of FaceTime was enforced by mobile operators, rather than Apple!

Three Words: find out what your friends really think about you

Three Words: find out what your friends really think about you
Three Words is a quick and painless way to find out both a) how popular you are, and b) how much your friends secretly despise you. It's basically a cut-down version of Formspring: you sign up, and then people can describe you in three words... and that's it.

By default your three words are submitted anonymous ly, which some people will like, but ultimately it will make the results mostly meaningless. Pages don't seem to have any kind of security, and there's nothing preventing you from spamming a page with multiple sets of words. Really, if it wasn't so easy to use -- if its "viralness" or virulence wasn't so high -- Three Words would be a bit... useless.

Still, it's fun enough to put your Three Words page up on Facebook or Twitter to see what your friends really think about you. Be prepared for some stupid and unsavory responses, though; anonymity can empower people to do some stupid things...

How to easily crop photos on your iPhone

Ever wish you could easily crop a photo right on your iPhone? Well, if speed is more important than resolution you can. We’ll show you how after the break!

Here’s how to easily crop a picture on your iPhone (or iPod touch or iPad):

  1. Tap on the Photo app
  2. Tap on Camera Roll (or one of your Photo Albums)
  3. Tap on the picture you want to c rop
  4. Use pinch to zoom to expand the photo until just the par t you want to keep is filling the screen
  5. Take a screenshot

That’s it! Your cropped photo is now saved to the Camera Roll! Sure it’s lost some megapixels (down to 960×640 on an iPhone 4 or iPod touch 4, or 480×320 on older devices) but it’s fast and perfect for on screen viewing or sharing via email or MMS.

If you have any questions or any other cool photo tips to share, leave them in comments!

[Thanks to Brian for sending this in, and his adorable son Dean for modeling! And since we hadn't thought of this one before, we'll be sending a reward -- an iPhone case! -- your way!]
